Homework

A typical day’s homework for a CHES 2nd grader will look something like this:

-Reading Fluency Passage~ Words Per Minute (WPM) will be recorded M-Th

-Math Fact Fluency~ Practice the problems of the week M-Th

-Read for 15 minutes (with an adult or older sibling present)

-Review weekly phonics focus word list and sight words

-Work on Monthly Rocket Reader (as you complete books)

Reading Fluency: Students will bring home a weekly fluency passage which goes along with our phonics skill for the week.  Set a timer for 1 minute.  Your child should read the passage while  you will look on to see if they are reading the words accurately.  How many words are they able to read in the 1 minute?  Log the WPM (Words Per Minute) on the paper each night, Monday-Thursday.  On Thursday, show on the graph the WPM for that day.

Daily Reading: I ask that students read for 15-20 minutes or more each night.  Some days your child will bring a book home from class or even a Studies Weekly.  After reading, I ask that they keep a log of the books that they read, along with the amount of time spent reading.  Parents should initial the log each night.

Studies Weekly: Some weeks, students will come home with a Studies Weekly.  This will tie to our Social Studies standard that we have been working on in class.  Most times we have read it once in class already.  It will be your child’s responsibility to reread it and complete the back at home.

***The time they spend reading the Studies Weekly should count towards their nightly 15-20 minutes and may be written on their Reading Log.

Phonics Words and Sight Words:  Each week, a list of phonics words will be sent home.  This list allows your child the opportunity to practice words that are part of the week’s phonics focus.   These words can be practiced at home throughout the week.  This is not SPELLING, rather students learning to apply phonics/spelling patterns/rules to their reading and writing.  There will also be sight words that come home.  Sight words should first be memorized for reading and then for spelling. Sight word lists with be individualized once students have been assessed.

Math Fact Practice: While this is not required, I highly recommend daily fact fluency practice!  By the end of 2nd grade, students should know from memory all addition and subtraction facts within 20.  While we have many opportunities to practice facts at school, it would greatly help your child to practice with you at home as well.

Parent Homework:  Please respond to your child’s letter in the Family Pen Pal Journal each Friday.  Your child should return their journal to school each Monday (or the next day we have school).
